A brief explanation what Restorative Practice means to our school.

Aim:
To manage conflict and tensions by repairing harm and strengthening relationships as a way of creating safe and inclusive school communities.

Procedures:
You may be aware that at our school we deal with anything that goes wrong in Restorative ways. This means we focus on three things.
What happened?
Who has been harmed or hurt?
And, what is needed to make things right?

Results:
We talk with students so they understand the hurt and disappointment they have caused.
We seek to find with them a way to make things right. We talk about the behaviour that we are concerned about and separate this from the child.

Opportunities:
We treat it as an opportunity for learning, one that students will look back on and feel good about, because they took responsibility by making things right with everyone. It is important that we provide this opportunity of making things right. Sorry is not good enough, we go past that so that they can make things right.

Future:
Typically what happens is that students, staff and parents begin to use this language in their daily lives for many situations, both bad and good. It becomes a platform of progress.

I hope to organise a parent workshop for the future for our many interested parents.
