Opportunity Class at Wilkins

The Opportunity Class (O.C.) Program at Wilkins Public School commenced in 2002.  It offers a differentiated program to meet the particular needs of gifted and talented students. These students have been identified and selected through a DET testing procedure conducted by the Selective High School and Opportunity Class Placement Unit.  As such, it is expected that students participating in the Program will be working at a higher school level in a more engaging and rigorous curriculum.

At Wilkins we have two O.C. classes: one Year 5 and one Year 6 class. The OC Program is a two-year program during which students remain together and generally have the same teacher.  In 2009, Ms Palaitis will teach the year 5 O.C. and Ms Silvester will continue with year 6. The O.C. class teachers have qualifications in teaching gifted and talented students.

The O.C. classes also join in Wilkins Public's regular programs and access other school activities such as our music program (musical instrument training, school bands and performances), dance, PSSA sports and activities, chess and community languages.
