Wilkins Public School caters to a mainstream school population, with classes from Kindergarten to Year Six, as well as providing an on-site Opportunity Class Program. The school focuses upon student improvement supported through technology and the arts. It offers academic streaming, music, dance and visual arts programs, and the community languages of Italian, Portuguese and Vietnamese. A healthy, productive Parents & Citizens’ Association (P&C) supports our thriving student community through educational support and fundraising activities. Wilkins Public School is situated on generous sized grounds with lots of space for children to learn and play. The Wilkins Green, an on-site community-based eco-space, provides children with opportunities to learn about the natural environment and sustainable futures. AcademicAt Wilkins Public School we provide high quality education for our students. Our teachers are constantly working to improve student numeracy and literacy, as well as providing engaging lessons in science, human society and its environment (HSIE), creative and performing arts (CAPA) and personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE). As part of our community languages program all students in years 1 to 6 spend two hours a week studying Italian, Portuguese or Vietnamese. In addition, our school has a specialist music program. To support our teaching, the school boasts a well-equipped library, a modern school hall with a performance space, a technology centre, portable data projectors and laptops for classroom teaching, as well as computers in every classroom. Opportunity ClassesWilkins PS has two Opportunity Classes for gifted and talented students from the Sydney area in years 5 and 6. Extra-Curricular ActivitiesOur teachers offer students the opportunity to participate in such activities as choir, string ensemble, school band, dance, debating, public speaking, chess, softball, oz-tag and video club during lunchtime or before and after school. School GroundsOur school is an oasis of open green space in the inner-city. Areas A & B have shady trees, gardens, benches and tables to sit at, as well as an asphalt quadrangle for games of handball. Area C offers students play equipment and space for social games under the protective canopy of eucalypts. Area D is a full size oval for ball games such as soccer and touch football. In addition, classes regularly visit Wilkins Green to feed the chickens and learn about the different herbs and vegetables growing in the garden.
