Your child has expressed an interest in participating in the school’s 2009 music program. The Wilkins’ music program includes: An exciting innovation this year is the Rock Band Pilot Project, which aims to introduce intermediate and advanced level musicians to a rock band experience. Under the direction of Chris Pevy-Buenen, the project will be held during the first two terms this year. A second round of the project may occur in terms three and four. We are also pleased to welcome Sarah Stephen as the new director of an expanded Beginner Strings, which will cater for beginner violin and cello students. Numerous violins* and cellos* of various sizes are available from the school. Membership in the music program costs $80 for the year, whether your child is in one or more ensembles. If you prefer to pay membership on a per term basis, the cost is $25 per term (i.e. you receive a discount if you pay for the year upfront). Students who are selected for the Rock Band Pilot Project will be required to pay $50 for the two terms. These fees are a contribution to the costs of music scores, parts, copyright, CDs etc, as well as servicing and purchasing instruments. In addition to violins and cellos, a number of other instruments can be hired from the school at a cost of $50 per term. These include flutes, clarinets, saxophones, tenor saxophone*, trumpets, a bass clarinet*, French Horn, euphonium*, trombone* and electric bass guitar*. It is expected that students hiring a school instrument will join an ensemble. If your child takes up an instrument, they will need to have lessons on their chosen instrument. You may wish to explore the instrumental tutors who provide tuition on the school’s premises. The tuition is held during class time or before or after school. Most tutors charge $25-30 per half hour lesson and some will negotiate group lesson arrangements at a reduced cost if the students are available. Alternatively, you could arrange music lessons with external tutors. Wilkins Public School recognises the value and joy that music can provide for its students and we encourage you to support your child in participating in our growing and exciting music program. Some of the highlights of the 2008 music program included the school’s Music Extravaganza nights and performing in the Sydney Opera House. As part of the CAPA Key Learning Area, music is one of the school’s five priority areas, and in addition to the intrinsic benefits of music, participating in music can enhance a child’s academic and educational development. The Wilkins Music Association, a vehicle that enables parents to support the music program, is a great way for parents and caregivers to become involved in the music program. Meetings are held every second Thursday in each month. For more information on the music program, Wilkins Music Association, to obtain a copy of the Instrument Hire form or for instrumental tutor details, go to our website http://web2.wilkins-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ or ask at the school office. We would love your child to participate in the Wilkins P.S. musical community. Please indicate the items on the following page that your child is interested in and return the form to school as soon as possible. Yours faithfully
* In 2009, in order to encourage the take-up of various instruments, those instruments shown on the previous page with an asterisk ‘*’ will be exempt from instrument hire fees (although a $50 deposit is required). Contact Mr Olofsson for more information and for any conditions that apply.
